Sri Lanka is an appealing travel destination for Australians due to its rich cultural heritage and stunning landscapes. The island offers tropical beaches and UNESCO World Heritage Sites, making it attractive to a segment of the approximately 300,000 Australians who travel abroad each year.
Sri Lanka's safety for tourists from Australia varies when compared to Australia. According to the Global Peace Index, Sri Lanka ranks 99th out of 160 countries, significantly lower than Australia's 19th position. The murder rate in Sri Lanka is 3.5 per 100,000 people, compared to Australia's 0.7. Additionally, female murder rates are 2.2 in Sri Lanka versus 0.4 in Australia. In terms of organized crime, Sri Lanka has higher indices in several areas, such as state crime (7.0 in Sri Lanka vs. 2.0 in Australia) and human trafficking (5.5 in Sri Lanka vs. 3.5 in Australia). While some crime categories show comparable levels, the overall safety perception is lower in Sri Lanka. In summary, while many tourists visit Sri Lanka safely, it is essential to remain vigilant and informed about local conditions and safety practices.
