Laos has become an appealing destination for Thai visitors, thanks to its natural beauty and cultural heritage. With nearly five million international arrivals annually, it attracts travelers looking for picturesque landscapes and historical sites. Given that 10.4 million Thais travel abroad each year, a portion of them is likely to consider Laos as a travel option.
Laos is generally considered a safe destination for tourists, especially when compared to Thailand. According to the Global Peace Index, Laos ranks 48th out of 160 countries, making it safer than Thailand, which ranks 73rd. While specific murder rates for Laos are not available, Thailand has a murder rate of 4.9 per 100,000 people. In terms of organized crime, both countries have similar scores for mafia groups (1.5), but Laos scores slightly worse in crime networks (6.0 compared to Thailand's 5.0) and foreign crime (8.0 for Laos versus 7.5 for Thailand). However, Laos has a lower score for resource crime (1.5) compared to Thailand (6.0). Overall, while both countries face challenges related to crime, Laos is generally perceived as a safer option for tourists coming from Thailand.
