Iran offers a rich historical and diverse landscape, making it an appealing destination for some Afghans. Although foreign arrivals are currently modest, the country's tourism sector is undergoing adjustments, which may attract a segment of Afghanistan's 40 million population.
Iran is generally considered safer for tourists compared to Afghanistan. According to the Global Peace Index, Iran ranks 131st out of 160 countries, while Afghanistan is ranked 157th. The murder rate in Iran is significantly lower at 2.2 per 100,000 people, compared to Afghanistan's 4.0. In terms of organized crime, both countries face challenges, but Iran has slightly better scores in several areas. For example, the index for mafia groups is 7.0 in Iran versus 7.5 in Afghanistan, and the crime networks score is 7.5 for Iran compared to 8.5 for Afghanistan. While no country is without risk, tourists from Afghanistan may find Iran to be a relatively safer destination.
