India offers a rich blend of cultural heritage, natural beauty, and modern amenities, making it an appealing destination for Sri Lankans. With around 300,000 Sri Lankans traveling abroad annually, a portion is likely to choose India to explore its renowned landmarks and diverse ecosystems.
India's safety for tourists coming from Sri Lanka can be assessed through various indices and crime statistics. According to the Global Peace Index, India is ranked 114th out of 160 countries, while Sri Lanka is ranked 99th, indicating that Sri Lanka is considered safer. In terms of murder rates, Sri Lanka has a rate of 3.5 per 100,000 people compared to India's 2.9. However, when looking specifically at female murder rates, Sri Lanka has a rate of 2.2, slightly lower than India's 2.5. The Global Organized Crime Index provides further insights, with India generally scoring lower (indicating worse conditions) in several categories compared to Sri Lanka. For example, India's scores for crime networks and human trafficking are higher, suggesting more significant challenges in these areas. Overall, while India has its attractions for tourists, the safety rankings and crime statistics suggest that it may not be as safe as Sri Lanka, and travelers should exercise caution and stay informed about their surroundings.
