Indonesia offers a rich cultural heritage and stunning natural beauty, making it an appealing destination for some of Timor-Leste's population of around one million. Its combination of tranquil beaches, lush jungles, volcanic landscapes, and vibrant cities adds to its attractiveness for visitors.
Indonesia is generally considered a safe destination for tourists, including those coming from Timor-Leste. According to the Global Peace Index, Indonesia ranks 47th out of 160 countries, while Timor-Leste is ranked 50th, indicating a similar level of safety. In terms of crime statistics, Indonesia has a significantly lower murder rate of 0.6 per 100,000 people compared to Timor-Leste's rate of 4.1. However, the Global Organized Crime Index shows that Indonesia faces challenges with organized crime, scoring higher in various categories such as crime networks and human trafficking. Overall, while Indonesia is relatively safe, tourists should remain aware of their surroundings and take standard precautions, similar to those they would take in Timor-Leste.
