Haiti offers a unique blend of vibrant culture and rich history, making it an intriguing option for some American travelers. Although foreign tourist arrivals have stabilized in recent years, the country's potential as a travel destination remains notable. With 33.5 million Americans traveling internationally each year, there is a segment that may find Haiti appealing.
Haiti is considered to be less safe for tourists compared to the United States. According to the Global Peace Index, Haiti ranks 141st out of 160 countries, while the U.S. is ranked 130th. The murder rate in Haiti is notably higher at 13.0 per 100,000 people, compared to 6.8 in the U.S. Additionally, the Global Organized Crime Index indicates that Haiti faces significant challenges with organized crime, scoring higher on various indices (with 10 being the worst) in areas such as mafia presence (Haiti: 8.0) and state crime (Haiti: 7.0). Travelers should exercise caution and stay informed about the current situation when considering a visit to Haiti.
