Haiti offers a unique appeal for some Dominican visitors due to its vibrant culture and rich history. While foreign tourist arrivals have stabilized recently, there remains potential for interest among the approximately 600,000 Dominicans who travel abroad each year, with a portion likely considering Haiti as a destination.
Haiti presents safety concerns for tourists, especially when compared to the Dominican Republic. According to the Global Peace Index, Haiti ranks 141st out of 160 countries, while the Dominican Republic is ranked 95th. The murder rate in Haiti is 13.0 per 100,000 people, slightly higher than the Dominican Republic's rate of 10.5. Furthermore, the Global Organized Crime Index indicates that Haiti faces significant challenges, with higher scores in areas such as mafia groups (Haiti: 8.0 vs. Dominican Republic: 5.0) and state crime (Haiti: 7.0 vs. Dominican Republic: 5.5). While some aspects of crime, such as human trafficking and smuggling, are similarly rated for both countries, the overall crime environment in Haiti is less favorable for tourists. Therefore, caution is advised for those considering travel from the Dominican Republic to Haiti.
