Haiti offers a unique blend of vibrant culture and rich history, making it an intriguing option for some Australian travelers. While foreign tourist arrivals have stabilized in recent years, there is potential for interest among the approximately 300,000 Australians who travel abroad annually.
Haiti is generally considered less safe for tourists compared to Australia. According to the Global Peace Index, Haiti ranks 141st out of 160 countries, while Australia is ranked 19th. The murder rate in Haiti is significantly higher at 13.0 per 100,000 people, compared to Australia's rate of 0.7. In terms of organized crime, Haiti scores poorly across various categories, with mafia groups rated 8.0 and state crime rated 7.0 on a scale where 1 is best and 10 is worst. Other crime indices, such as human trafficking and drug trade, also reflect a higher risk in Haiti compared to Australia. Overall, tourists from Australia should exercise caution and stay informed about safety conditions when considering travel to Haiti.
