Honduras offers a diverse range of tourism attractions, from its stunning Caribbean coast to its scenic highlands. Although it may not be a major global tourism hub, its unique combination of natural beauty and cultural heritage can appeal to some Mexican travelers. With 7.3 million Mexicans traveling abroad annually, a portion may find Honduras an appealing destination.
Honduras presents a complex safety landscape for tourists coming from Mexico. According to the Global Peace Index, Honduras is ranked 121st out of 160 countries, making it safer than Mexico, which is ranked 136th. In terms of murder rates, Honduras has a rate of 38.3 per 100,000 people, compared to Mexico's 28.2. Female murder rates are also slightly higher in Honduras (6.5) than in Mexico (6.2). The Global Organized Crime Index indicates that both countries face significant challenges with organized crime, but Honduras generally scores slightly better in certain areas. For instance, while both countries have high scores for mafia groups and crime networks (9.0 for Mexico and 8.5 for Honduras), Honduras has lower scores in human trafficking and smuggling compared to Mexico. Overall, while Honduras may be statistically safer than Mexico in some respects, it is essential for tourists to remain vigilant and informed about specific areas and current conditions when traveling.
