Honduras offers a diverse range of attractions, from its beautiful Caribbean coast to its scenic highlands, making it appealing to some Belizeans. While it may not be a major global tourism hotspot, its unique combination of natural beauty and cultural heritage can attract a segment of the Belizean population.
Honduras has a higher crime rate compared to Belize, making it a less safe destination for tourists. According to the Global Peace Index, Honduras ranks 121st out of 160 countries. The murder rate in Honduras is 38.3 per 100,000 people, while Belize has a lower rate of 31.2. Additionally, the Global Organized Crime Index indicates that Honduras faces significant challenges with organized crime, scoring worse than Belize in several categories, including mafia groups (Honduras 8.5 vs. Belize 6.5) and crime networks (Honduras 8.0 vs. Belize 3.5). While many tourists visit Honduras safely, it's essential to stay informed about local conditions and exercise caution.
