Guinea-Bissau offers a unique but underdeveloped tourism experience that could appeal to some Portuguese visitors. While tourism plays a minor role in the country's economy, its status as a relatively unexplored destination may attract a segment of the 1 million Portuguese who travel abroad annually.
Guinea Bissau is generally considered less safe for tourists compared to Portugal. While Portugal ranks 7th in the Global Peace Index and has a low murder rate of 0.8 per 100,000 people, Guinea Bissau is ranked 83rd and has a slightly higher murder rate of 1.1. Additionally, Portugal has lower indices for organized crime, indicating a more stable environment. For example, Portugal scores 4.5 for mafia groups and 6.0 for crime networks, whereas Guinea Bissau scores 1.0 and 8.0, respectively. Overall, while tourists from Portugal can visit Guinea Bissau, they should exercise caution and stay informed about local conditions.
