The United Kingdom is a well-regarded destination for international tourism, celebrated for its diverse history, culture, and natural beauty. Although there has been a recent decline in visitor numbers, it still attracts considerable international interest, as evidenced by substantial tourist spending. Among the 8.6 million Belgians who travel abroad annually, a portion may find the UK appealing.
The safety of the United Kingdom for tourists from Belgium can be assessed through various rankings and statistics. According to a safety ranking for walking alone at night, the UK is ranked 37th out of 40 countries, while Belgium is slightly lower at 39th. However, the Global Peace Index ranks the UK 34th out of 160 countries, indicating it is generally considered safe, though Belgium ranks higher at 16th. In terms of murder rates, Belgium has a rate of 1.1 per 100,000 people, while the UK has a slightly lower rate of 1.0. Female murder rates are higher in the UK at 0.6 compared to Belgium's 0.2. Regarding organized crime, Belgium scores better in several categories on the Global Organized Crime Index, with lower scores indicating better safety. For example, Belgium's mafia group index is 3.0 compared to the UK's 4.0, and its crime networks score is 4.5 versus the UK's 6.5. In summary, while the UK has some safety concerns, particularly regarding walking alone at night, it remains a relatively safe destination overall. Tourists from Belgium can visit with caution, as both countries have their own safety challenges.
