France is a top global tourist destination, attracting millions annually with its vibrant and diverse appeal. It is likely to attract a portion of the 1 million Portuguese travelers who go abroad each year, making it an appealing option for some visitors from Portugal.
France is generally safe for tourists, including those coming from Portugal, but there are notable differences in safety rankings. According to safety rankings, France is positioned 40th out of 40 countries for safety while walking alone at night, compared to Portugal, which ranks 15th. The Global Peace Index also reflects this, with France ranked 84th out of 160 countries, while Portugal is much safer at 7th. In terms of crime statistics, Portugal has a lower murder rate of 0.8 per 100,000 people, compared to France's rate of 1.1. Female murder rates similarly show Portugal at 0.6 and France at 0.7. Additionally, the Global Organized Crime Index indicates that Portugal generally has lower scores across various crime categories compared to France, suggesting a safer environment in Portugal. Overall, while France is a popular tourist destination, travelers from Portugal may find it less safe than their home country.
