Ethiopia offers a compelling appeal for some of Senegal's 17 million residents, thanks to its rich culture and historical sites. The country's diverse tourism options, including cultural, adventure, and business experiences, contribute to its attractiveness as a travel destination.
Ethiopia's safety for tourists, particularly those coming from Senegal, is a concern based on several safety indices. According to the Global Peace Index, Ethiopia ranks 142nd out of 160 countries, significantly lower than Senegal, which ranks 82nd. In terms of crime statistics, the murder rate in Ethiopia is notably higher at 8.8 per 100,000 people compared to Senegal's 0.3. The Global Organized Crime Index also reflects higher levels of crime in Ethiopia, with various crime categories scoring worse than those in Senegal. For example, while both countries have similar scores for mafia groups (Senegal 2.5, Ethiopia 2.0), Ethiopia scores higher in crime networks (6.5 vs. Senegal's 5.5) and arms trafficking (7.0 vs. Senegal's 4.5). Overall, while travel to Ethiopia is possible, tourists from Senegal should be aware of the higher crime rates and potential safety concerns.
