Ethiopia offers a rich cultural experience and historical landmarks, making it an appealing destination for some Omani travelers. With 1.1 million Omanis traveling abroad annually, a portion may find Ethiopia's blend of cultural, adventure, and business tourism particularly attractive.
Ethiopia's safety for tourists, particularly those coming from Oman, is a concern. According to the Global Peace Index, Ethiopia ranks 142nd out of 160 countries, significantly lower than Oman's 37th position. The murder rate in Ethiopia is notably higher at 8.8 per 100,000 people compared to Oman's 0.2. Additionally, the Global Organized Crime Index indicates that while both countries face organized crime, Ethiopia has higher indices in several categories, suggesting greater challenges. For instance, Ethiopia scores 6.5 for crime networks and 7.0 for arms trafficking, whereas Oman scores significantly lower in these areas. Overall, while travel is possible, tourists should exercise caution and stay informed about the local situation in Ethiopia.
