Ethiopia offers a unique appeal for Malaysian visitors due to its rich culture and historical sites. The country's diverse tourism options, including cultural, adventure, and business tourism, create a balanced experience. As a result, it may attract a segment of Malaysia's 34 million population.
Ethiopia's safety for tourists, including those from Malaysia, is a concern. According to the Global Peace Index, Ethiopia ranks 142nd out of 160 countries, indicating lower safety compared to Malaysia, which ranks 10th. The murder rate in Ethiopia is significantly higher at 8.8 per 100,000 people, compared to Malaysia's 0.7. In terms of organized crime, Malaysia generally has better scores across various categories. For instance, the mafia groups index is 4.5 for Malaysia and 2.0 for Ethiopia, while crime networks score 5.5 in Malaysia versus 6.5 in Ethiopia. Other areas, such as human trafficking and drug trade, also show Malaysia as relatively safer. Overall, while tourism is possible in Ethiopia, travelers should exercise caution and stay informed about the local situation.
