Ethiopia offers a unique blend of rich culture and historical landmarks, making it an appealing destination for some Canadian travelers. With 5.0 million Canadians traveling abroad annually, a portion may find Ethiopia's cultural, adventure, and business tourism opportunities intriguing.
Ethiopia's safety for tourists, particularly those from Canada, is a concern. According to the Global Peace Index, Ethiopia ranks 142nd out of 160 countries, significantly lower than Canada's 11th position. The murder rate in Ethiopia stands at 8.8 per 100,000 people, compared to Canada's 2.1. Additionally, the Global Organized Crime Index indicates various crime-related metrics where Ethiopia scores worse than Canada. For example, crime networks in Ethiopia have a score of 6.5 (with 10 being the worst), while Canada scores 4.0. Other areas, such as human trafficking and arms trafficking, also show higher risks in Ethiopia. In summary, while travel to Ethiopia is possible, tourists should be aware of the increased safety risks compared to Canada. It is advisable to stay informed and take necessary precautions when traveling.
