Eritrea offers a unique blend of ancient history and authentic experiences, making it an intriguing destination for some Indian travelers. With 8.6 million Indians traveling abroad annually, a portion may find Eritrea's modest yet promising tourism sector appealing.
Eritrea's safety for tourists, including those from India, can be assessed through various indices. According to the Global Peace Index, Eritrea ranks 134th out of 160 countries, which is lower than India's ranking of 114th, indicating a relatively less safe environment. While specific murder rates for Eritrea are not available, India's murder rate stands at 2.9 per 100,000 people. In terms of organized crime, Eritrea has a lower score for mafia groups (1.0) compared to India (3.5), but higher scores in state crime (9.5) and human trafficking (9.0), suggesting significant issues in these areas. Overall, while Eritrea may have lower organized crime in some aspects, the higher state crime and human trafficking indices indicate potential risks for tourists. Therefore, travelers should exercise caution and stay informed about the local situation when considering a visit to Eritrea.
