Egypt is an appealing destination for some Belgian travelers, given its rich history and cultural significance. With 8.6 million Belgians traveling internationally each year, a portion may find Egypt an intriguing option for their travels, despite recent fluctuations in its tourism sector.
Egypt presents certain safety challenges for tourists compared to Belgium. While Belgium ranks 16th in the Global Peace Index, Egypt is significantly lower at 103rd out of 160 countries. Additionally, the murder rate in Egypt is higher at 2.6 per 100,000 people compared to Belgium's 1.1. Crime statistics indicate that both countries have similar scores for mafia groups (3.0), but Egypt has higher risks in areas such as state crime (8.0) and arms trafficking (7.0). In contrast, Belgium generally has lower scores across various crime indices, indicating a safer environment for tourists. Overall, while many tourists visit Egypt without issues, it's advisable for travelers from Belgium to stay informed about local conditions and take standard safety precautions.
