The Dominican Republic offers a compelling mix of natural beauty and cultural richness, making it an appealing destination for some Portuguese travelers. With around 1 million Portuguese citizens traveling abroad annually, a portion may find the Dominican Republic an attractive option for their travels.
The safety of the Dominican Republic for tourists from Portugal can be assessed through various crime statistics. Portugal is ranked 7th in safety globally, with a low murder rate of 0.8 per 100,000 people. In contrast, the Dominican Republic has a significantly higher murder rate of 10.5 per 100,000 people and is ranked 95th out of 160 countries on the Global Peace Index. Additionally, the Global Organized Crime Index indicates that while both countries face organized crime, the Dominican Republic generally has higher indices, suggesting more challenges in areas such as human trafficking and drug trade. For example, the Dominican Republic scores 6.5 for heroin trade and 8.0 for cocaine trade, compared to Portugal's much lower scores. In summary, while the Dominican Republic can be a popular tourist destination, it presents more safety concerns compared to Portugal, and travelers should exercise caution and stay informed about local conditions.
