Djibouti offers a unique appeal for some Eritreans, thanks to its rich cultural heritage and strategic location in the Horn of Africa. While its tourism infrastructure and income generation may not rank highly globally, the country's blend of natural beauty and cultural diversity makes it an intriguing option for a segment of Eritrea's 4 million population.
Djibouti is generally considered safer for tourists compared to Eritrea. According to the Global Peace Index, Djibouti ranks 117th out of 160 countries, while Eritrea ranks lower at 134th. In terms of organized crime, Djibouti has lower indices in several categories compared to Eritrea. For instance, Djibouti scores 1.5 for mafia groups, compared to Eritrea's 1.0, and both countries have similar scores for drug trade, but Djibouti fares better in state crime (5.0) compared to Eritrea's high score of 9.5. Overall, while no destination is without risks, Djibouti presents a relatively safer environment for tourists from Eritrea.
