Cyprus offers a unique blend of cultural heritage and strategic location in the Mediterranean, making it an appealing destination for some Mauritanians. With a population of around 5 million, a segment of Mauritanians may find the island's tourism opportunities and international connectivity particularly attractive.
Cyprus is generally considered a safe destination for tourists, including those from Mauritania. It ranks 11th among 40 European countries for safety while walking alone at night. According to the Global Peace Index, Cyprus is 86th out of 160 countries, which is safer than Mauritania, ranked 93rd. In terms of crime statistics, the murder rate in Cyprus is slightly higher at 1.3 per 100,000 people compared to Mauritania's 1.0. However, various organized crime indices show that Cyprus has lower scores in several categories, indicating a relatively safer environment. For example, Cyprus scores 3.5 for mafia groups and 4.0 for state crime, compared to Mauritania's 2.5 and 7.0, respectively. Overall, while both countries have their challenges, Cyprus offers a safer experience for tourists compared to Mauritania.
