Cyprus is an appealing destination for Canadian travelers due to its rich cultural heritage and strategic location in the Mediterranean. With 5 million Canadians traveling abroad annually, a portion of them may find Cyprus an interesting place to visit.
Cyprus is generally considered safe for tourists, including those from Canada. It ranks 11th among 40 European countries for safety while walking alone at night. However, according to the Global Peace Index, it is ranked 86th out of 160 countries, indicating it is less safe than Canada, which ranks 11th. In terms of crime statistics, Cyprus has a murder rate of 1.3 per 100,000 people, lower than Canada's rate of 2.1. Female murder rates are similar, with Cyprus at 1.1 and Canada at 1.0. The Global Organized Crime Index shows that Cyprus has some challenges, particularly with foreign crime (7.0) and human trafficking (5.5). In comparison, Canada generally fares better across various crime indices. Overall, while Cyprus is relatively safe, tourists should remain aware of their surroundings and take standard precautions, as they would in any destination.
