Cyprus is a compelling destination for many Bulgarian travelers, given its rich cultural heritage and strategic location in the Mediterranean. With 4.1 million Bulgarians traveling abroad annually, a significant number may find Cyprus appealing for its tourism offerings and opportunities for cultural exchange.
Cyprus is generally considered a safe destination for tourists, including those from Bulgaria. It ranks 11th out of 40 countries for safety while walking alone at night, which is better than Bulgaria's 21st place. However, according to the Global Peace Index, Cyprus is ranked 86th out of 160 countries, compared to Bulgaria's 26th position, indicating that Bulgaria may be perceived as safer overall in terms of peace. In terms of murder rates, both countries have the same rate of 1.3 per 100,000 people, but Cyprus has a slightly higher female murder rate at 1.1 compared to Bulgaria's 0.8. Regarding organized crime, Cyprus generally scores better than Bulgaria in several categories, such as mafia groups (Cyprus 3.5 vs. Bulgaria 4.5) and state crime (Cyprus 4.0 vs. Bulgaria 7.5). However, Bulgaria has lower scores in areas like foreign crime and human trafficking. In summary, while Cyprus is a safe place for tourists, some aspects of crime and safety may vary when compared to Bulgaria. Tourists should remain aware of their surroundings and take standard precautions, as they would in any travel destination.
