Cuba offers a unique blend of cultural heritage and natural beauty, making it an intriguing destination for some Malaysians. Its colonial architecture, lively salsa music, and beautiful beaches contribute to its appeal. Despite recent challenges, tourism remains a key part of Cuba's identity and economic strategy, attracting a segment of Malaysia's 34 million population.
Cuba is generally considered safe for tourists, but it has some safety concerns compared to Malaysia. According to the Global Peace Index, Cuba ranks 96th out of 160 countries, while Malaysia ranks significantly higher at 10th. The murder rate in Cuba is 5.0 per 100,000 people, compared to Malaysia's low rate of 0.7. In terms of organized crime, Cuba has a lower score in several areas, such as crime networks (Cuba 2.5 vs. Malaysia 5.5) and arms trafficking (Cuba 1.5 vs. Malaysia 5.5), indicating a relatively lower presence of organized crime in those categories. However, Cuba's murder rate and certain crime indices suggest that tourists should remain vigilant and take standard safety precautions while traveling there.
