Colombia is an appealing destination for Portuguese travelers, known for its vibrant culture and beautiful landscapes. With around 2.2 million foreign visitors each year, it holds a significant place in global tourism. Given that 1 million Portuguese travel abroad annually, a portion of them may find Colombia an intriguing option to explore.
Colombia presents a different safety landscape for tourists compared to Portugal. While Portugal ranks 7th in the Global Peace Index and has a low murder rate of 0.8 per 100,000 people, Colombia ranks 143rd with a significantly higher murder rate of 27.5. In terms of organized crime, Portugal generally scores better across various categories, such as mafia presence and crime networks, with scores ranging from 4.0 to 6.0. In contrast, Colombia has much higher scores, indicating more severe issues, particularly in mafia groups (9.5) and drug-related crimes (cocaine trade at 9.5). While many tourists visit Colombia without incident, it is essential for travelers from Portugal to remain vigilant, stay informed about their destinations, and follow local advice to ensure a safe experience.
