Colombia, known for its vibrant culture and beautiful landscapes, is an appealing destination in global tourism. With around 2.2 million foreign visitors each year, it ranks highly among various travel options worldwide. A segment of Malaysia's 34 million population may find Colombia particularly interesting for its diverse tourism offerings.
Colombia presents certain safety concerns for tourists, including those from Malaysia. According to the Global Peace Index, Colombia ranks 143rd out of 160 countries, significantly lower than Malaysia, which ranks 10th. The murder rate in Colombia is notably high at 27.5 per 100,000 people, compared to Malaysia's low rate of 0.7. Additionally, the Global Organized Crime Index indicates that Colombia faces serious challenges with organized crime, scoring poorly in various categories such as mafia groups (9.5), crime networks (9.0), and drug trafficking (cocaine trade at 9.5). In contrast, Malaysia generally scores better across these categories, indicating a safer environment. While many tourists do visit Colombia and enjoy their experiences, it is essential for travelers to stay informed about safety measures and local conditions.
