Colombia is an appealing destination for some Honduran travelers, thanks to its vibrant culture and beautiful landscapes. With around 500,000 Hondurans traveling abroad each year, a portion may choose Colombia, which attracts about 2.2 million foreign visitors annually, highlighting its diverse tourism offerings.
Colombia's safety for tourists, particularly those coming from Honduras, presents a mixed picture. According to the Global Peace Index, Colombia ranks 143rd out of 160 countries, while Honduras is ranked slightly better at 121st. In terms of murder rates, the UN Office on Drugs and Crime reports that Honduras has a higher murder rate of 38.3 per 100,000 people compared to Colombia's 27.5. Female murder rates also favor Colombia, with Honduras at 6.5 and Colombia at 4.1. The Global Organized Crime Index indicates that both countries face significant challenges from organized crime, but Colombia generally scores worse in several categories, such as mafia groups (Colombia 9.5 vs. Honduras 8.5) and cocaine trade (Colombia 9.5 vs. Honduras 7.5). Overall, while Colombia has lower murder rates than Honduras, the presence of organized crime may impact safety perceptions. Tourists should remain vigilant and informed about the areas they plan to visit in Colombia.
