Colombia is an appealing destination for Ecuadorian travelers, thanks to its vibrant culture and beautiful landscapes. With around 2.2 million foreign visitors each year, it holds a prominent place in global tourism. Among the 500,000 Ecuadorians who travel abroad annually, a portion is likely drawn to explore Colombia's diverse attractions.
Colombia has some safety concerns for tourists, particularly when compared to Ecuador. According to the Global Peace Index, Colombia ranks 143rd out of 160 countries, while Ecuador is ranked higher at 128th. The murder rate in Colombia is significantly higher at 27.5 per 100,000 people, compared to Ecuador's 14.0. Additionally, the Global Organized Crime Index indicates that Colombia faces more challenges with organized crime, with higher scores across various categories, such as mafia groups (Colombia 9.5 vs. Ecuador 6.5) and drug trafficking (Colombia 9.5 vs. Ecuador 7.0). While many tourists visit Colombia safely, it is advisable for travelers from Ecuador to remain vigilant and informed about local conditions and safety measures.
