Colombia is an appealing destination for Costa Ricans due to its vibrant culture and beautiful landscapes. With around 2.2 million foreign visitors each year, it holds a significant place in global tourism. Among the 600,000 Costa Ricans who travel abroad annually, a portion may find Colombia particularly attractive for their travels.
Colombia presents certain safety concerns for tourists, especially when compared to Costa Rica. According to the Global Peace Index, Colombia ranks 143rd out of 160 countries, significantly lower than Costa Rica, which is ranked 56th. In terms of crime statistics, the murder rate in Colombia is 27.5 per 100,000 people, compared to Costa Rica's 11.4. Additionally, female murder rates are higher in Colombia at 4.1, versus Costa Rica's 2.2. The Global Organized Crime Index also highlights notable differences: Colombia scores worse in various crime categories, including mafia groups (9.5 vs. Costa Rica's 6.5) and crime networks (9.0 vs. 6.0). While many tourists visit Colombia without incident, it's advisable for travelers to stay informed, exercise caution, and consider these statistics when planning their trip.
