Colombia is an appealing destination for Belgian travelers, thanks to its vibrant culture and breathtaking landscapes. With around 2.2 million foreign visitors each year, it holds a significant place in global tourism. Given that 8.6 million Belgians travel abroad annually, a portion of them may find Colombia an intriguing option for their travels.
Colombia presents some safety concerns for tourists, particularly when compared to Belgium. While Belgium ranks 16th in the Global Peace Index, Colombia is significantly lower at 143rd out of 160 countries. Crime statistics highlight a stark contrast: Belgium has a murder rate of 1.1 per 100,000 people, whereas Colombia's rate is much higher at 27.5. Additionally, female murder rates are 0.2 in Belgium compared to 4.1 in Colombia. The Global Organized Crime Index further illustrates the disparity, with Colombia scoring poorly in various categories, such as mafia groups (9.5) and crime networks (9.0), compared to Belgium's scores of 3.0 and 4.5, respectively. Overall, while many tourists visit Colombia without incident, it is essential for travelers from Belgium to remain vigilant and informed about safety measures while traveling in the country.
