China offers a compelling mix of modern infrastructure, rich cultural heritage, and diverse natural landscapes, making it an appealing destination for some South Africans. While tourist arrivals and spending may vary, China remains a significant player in global tourism, attracting a portion of South Africa's 60 million population.
China is generally considered safe for tourists, including those from South Africa. According to the Global Peace Index, China ranks 87th out of 160 countries, which is significantly better than South Africa's ranking of 125th. In terms of crime statistics, the murder rate in South Africa is notably high at 41.9 per 100,000 people, while China's murder rate is extremely low at 0.5 per 100,000. Regarding organized crime, both countries have similar scores, but China shows lower risks in several categories, such as foreign crime (China: 3.0 vs. South Africa: 7.5) and arms trafficking (China: 2.5 vs. South Africa: 8.0). Overall, while no destination is without risks, China presents a safer environment for tourists compared to South Africa.
