China offers a compelling mix of modern infrastructure, rich cultural heritage, and diverse natural landscapes, making it an appealing destination for some Somalis. While tourist arrivals and receipts can vary, China remains a significant player in global tourism, attracting a segment of Somalia's 18 million population.
China is generally considered safer for tourists compared to Somalia. According to the Global Peace Index, China ranks 87th out of 160 countries, while Somalia ranks much lower at 150th. The murder rate in China is notably low at 0.5 per 100,000 people, whereas data for Somalia is not available. In terms of organized crime, China scores better in several categories. For instance, the mafia presence is rated at 7.0 in China compared to 9.5 in Somalia. Both countries have similar scores for crime networks (7.5), but China has lower scores for state crime (7.0) and foreign crime (3.0) compared to Somalia's 7.0 and 4.5, respectively. While there are challenges in both countries, overall, China presents a safer environment for tourists, particularly those coming from Somalia.
