The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) offers a unique appeal for a segment of Kenya's population, estimated at 54 million. However, the lack of reliable tourism data makes it difficult to assess its overall attractiveness as a destination. This situation reflects broader challenges in data collection and reporting in the DRC, complicating a comprehensive analysis of its tourism potential.
Congo, D.R. is generally considered less safe for tourists compared to Kenya. According to the Global Peace Index, Congo, D.R. ranks 155th out of 160 countries, while Kenya ranks 120th. In terms of crime statistics, while specific murder rates for Congo, D.R. are not available, Kenya has a murder rate of 5.3 per 100,000 people. The Global Organized Crime Index indicates that Congo, D.R. faces significant challenges with organized crime, scoring worse than Kenya in several categories, including mafia groups (Congo, D.R. = 9.0 vs. Kenya = 7.0) and crime networks (Congo, D.R. = 9.0 vs. Kenya = 7.5). Overall, tourists from Kenya should exercise caution when considering travel to Congo, D.R. and stay informed about the local security situation.
