Belize offers a unique appeal for Portuguese travelers, showcasing its rich natural beauty and cultural experiences. While it attracts a modest number of international visitors, it stands out as an intriguing option for the approximately 1 million Portuguese who travel abroad annually, potentially drawing those interested in a more intimate connection with nature and local culture.
Belize has a significantly higher crime rate compared to Portugal, which may impact safety for tourists. While Portugal ranks 7th in the Global Peace Index and has a low murder rate of 0.8 per 100,000 people, Belize's murder rate is notably higher at 31.2. Additionally, various crime indices indicate that Belize faces challenges with organized crime, with higher scores in areas such as mafia groups (6.5) and drug trafficking compared to Portugal's scores. Tourists from Portugal should exercise caution and stay informed about safety measures when traveling to Belize.
