Belarus offers a blend of cultural and natural attractions that could appeal to some Hungarian travelers. With 4.4 million Hungarians traveling abroad annually, a portion may find Belarus an intriguing destination.
Belarus is generally considered less safe for tourists compared to Hungary. According to safety rankings, Belarus is 38th out of 40 countries for safety while walking alone at night, whereas Hungary ranks 16th. The Global Peace Index places Belarus at 110th out of 160 countries, in contrast to Hungary's 14th position. In terms of crime statistics, the murder rate in Belarus is significantly higher at 2.4 per 100,000 people compared to Hungary's 0.8. Female murder rates also reflect this disparity, with Belarus at 1.7 and Hungary at 0.5. Furthermore, the Global Organized Crime Index indicates that Belarus has higher scores across various crime categories, suggesting a greater prevalence of organized crime. For example, Belarus scores 4.0 for mafia groups compared to Hungary's 1.0, and state crime is rated 9.0 in Belarus versus 7.0 in Hungary. Overall, while travel to Belarus is possible, tourists from Hungary should be aware of the higher safety risks and crime rates.
