Botswana offers a unique appeal for South African visitors, characterized by its vast savannas and diverse wildlife. With moderate tourist numbers, it attracts discerning travelers looking for experiences off the beaten path. This makes it an intriguing option for a segment of South Africa's 60 million population.
Botswana is considered a safe destination for tourists, particularly when compared to South Africa. According to the Global Peace Index, Botswana ranks 49th out of 160 countries, while South Africa ranks 125th. The murder rate in Botswana is significantly lower at 10.5 per 100,000 people, compared to South Africa's 41.9. Additionally, the Global Organized Crime Index indicates that Botswana has a much lower prevalence of organized crime, with indices showing South Africa scoring higher in various categories such as mafia groups (7.0 vs. 1.0) and crime networks (7.0 vs. 5.5). Overall, these statistics suggest that tourists from South Africa can feel relatively safe when visiting Botswana.
