Brazil offers a rich blend of vibrant cultures and stunning landscapes, making it an appealing destination for Portuguese visitors. With a well-developed tourism infrastructure and attractions ranging from iconic beaches to the Amazon rainforest, it attracts a segment of the 1 million Portuguese who travel abroad annually.
Brazil presents certain safety concerns for tourists, especially when compared to Portugal. While Portugal ranks 7th in the Global Peace Index and has a low murder rate of 0.8 per 100,000 people, Brazil ranks 129th out of 160 countries, with a significantly higher murder rate of 22.5 per 100,000 people. Additionally, various crime statistics indicate that organized crime and violence are more prevalent in Brazil. For example, Brazil scores higher on indices related to mafia groups (7.5), state crime (8.5), and arms trafficking (8.0), compared to Portugal's lower scores (4.5 to 6.0). While many tourists visit Brazil safely, it is advisable for travelers from Portugal to stay informed about local conditions, exercise caution, and take necessary safety precautions while traveling in Brazil.
