Brazil offers a rich blend of vibrant cultures and stunning landscapes, making it an appealing destination for Canadian travelers. With a well-developed tourism infrastructure, it features diverse attractions, including famous beaches and the Amazon rainforest. Given that 5 million Canadians travel abroad annually, a portion may find Brazil an intriguing option.
Brazil presents certain safety concerns for tourists, particularly when compared to Canada. According to the Global Peace Index, Brazil ranks 129th out of 160 countries, while Canada is significantly safer at 11th place. In terms of crime statistics, Brazil has a much higher murder rate of 22.5 per 100,000 people, compared to Canada's 2.1. Additionally, the rates of female murders are also higher in Brazil (3.5) than in Canada (1.0). The Global Organized Crime Index further highlights the differences, with Brazil scoring worse in various categories such as mafia groups (7.5 vs. Canada’s 5.0) and arms trafficking (8.0 vs. Canada’s 2.5). While many tourists visit Brazil without incident, it is advisable for travelers from Canada to remain vigilant and informed about local safety conditions.
