Burundi offers a unique blend of natural beauty and cultural richness, making it an appealing destination for some Kenyans. Although its tourism sector is still developing and contributes minimally to overall exports, the country's strategic positioning and cultural assets suggest potential for growth. This could attract a segment of Kenya's 54 million population seeking new experiences.
Burundi is generally considered less safe for tourists compared to Kenya. According to the Global Peace Index, Burundi ranks 127th out of 160 countries, while Kenya ranks 120th. The murder rate in Burundi is 6.1 per 100,000 people, slightly higher than Kenya's rate of 5.3. In terms of organized crime, Burundi has lower scores in some areas, indicating less mafia presence and certain types of crime, but it also has higher scores for state crime and human trafficking. Overall, while both countries have their challenges, tourists from Kenya may find Burundi to be a riskier destination.
