Burundi offers a unique blend of natural beauty and cultural richness, making it an intriguing option for some Cypriot travelers. Although its tourism sector is currently small, it has potential for growth due to its distinctive cultural assets. With around 500,000 Cypriots traveling abroad annually, a portion may find Burundi appealing.
Burundi presents certain safety concerns for tourists, particularly when compared to Cyprus. While Cyprus is ranked 11th in safety among European countries and has a low murder rate of 1.3 per 100,000 people, Burundi ranks 127th globally on the Global Peace Index and has a significantly higher murder rate of 6.1 per 100,000 people. Additionally, crime statistics indicate that Burundi faces challenges with organized crime, state crime, and human trafficking, with indices indicating a more severe situation compared to Cyprus. For instance, Burundi scores 9.0 for state crime, while Cyprus scores 4.0. Overall, tourists from Cyprus should exercise caution and stay informed about the local situation when considering travel to Burundi.
