Burundi offers a unique experience with its natural beauty and cultural richness, making it an intriguing option for some Austrian travelers. Although tourism is a small part of the country's exports, there is potential for growth due to its distinctive cultural assets. With 7.5 million Austrians traveling abroad annually, a segment may find Burundi appealing.
Burundi presents significant safety concerns for tourists, including those from Austria. While Austria ranks 14th in safety among European countries, with a low murder rate of 0.7 per 100,000 people, Burundi is much less safe, with a murder rate of 6.1. The Global Peace Index places Burundi at 127th out of 160 countries, compared to Austria's 3rd position. Crime statistics further highlight the risks: female murder rates are 0.9 in Austria versus 2.3 in Burundi. The Global Organized Crime Index shows that while Austria has lower scores across various crime categories, Burundi scores poorly in state crime (9.0) and human trafficking (8.5). Overall, tourists from Austria should exercise caution when considering travel to Burundi, as it is not as safe as their home country.
