Burundi offers a unique blend of natural beauty and cultural richness, making it an intriguing option for some Emirati travelers. Although its tourism sector is still developing, the country's distinctive cultural assets and strategic location in East Africa could appeal to a segment of the 6.3 million Emiratis who travel abroad annually.
Burundi presents certain safety concerns for tourists from the United Arab Emirates. According to the Global Peace Index, Burundi is ranked 127th out of 160 countries, significantly lower than the UAE, which ranks 52nd. In terms of crime statistics, the murder rate in Burundi is 6.1 per 100,000 people, compared to just 0.5 in the UAE. Female murder rates also reflect this disparity, with Burundi at 2.3 and the UAE at 0.4. While both countries have a score of 1.0 for mafia groups, Burundi fares worse in other organized crime indices, particularly in state crime (9.0 for Burundi vs. 6.0 for UAE) and arms trafficking (8.0 for Burundi vs. 6.5 for UAE). Overall, while some aspects of crime may be comparable, the higher murder rates and lower safety rankings suggest that tourists should exercise caution when visiting Burundi.
