Bulgaria offers a rich blend of historical and natural attractions, combining ancient culture with modern hospitality. It attracts over seven million foreign visitors each year, highlighting its significance as a European destination. This makes it an appealing option for a segment of Malaysia's 34 million population.
Bulgaria is generally considered safe for tourists, including those from Malaysia. It ranks 21st out of 40 European countries for safety while walking alone at night. According to the Global Peace Index, Bulgaria is ranked 26th out of 160 countries, which indicates a relatively safe environment, though it is less safe compared to Malaysia, which ranks 10th. In terms of crime statistics, Bulgaria has a murder rate of 1.3 per 100,000 people, while Malaysia's rate is significantly lower at 0.7. Additionally, Bulgaria has a female murder rate of 0.8, whereas data for Malaysia is not available. When looking at organized crime, both countries have similar scores for mafia groups (4.5), but Bulgaria has higher indices for crime networks (6.5) and state crime (7.5). Overall, while Bulgaria is relatively safe, travelers should remain vigilant and aware of their surroundings, as they would in any foreign country.
