Bulgaria offers a blend of historical and natural attractions, showcasing a mix of ancient culture and modern hospitality. It attracts over seven million foreign visitors annually, highlighting its significance as a European destination. Given that 8.6 million Indians travel abroad each year, Bulgaria could appeal to a segment of Indian travelers seeking unique experiences.
Bulgaria is generally considered a safe destination for tourists, including those from India. It ranks 21st among 40 European countries for safety while walking alone at night. According to the Global Peace Index, Bulgaria is ranked 26th out of 160 countries, making it significantly safer than India, which ranks 114th. In terms of crime statistics, Bulgaria has a lower murder rate of 1.3 per 100,000 people compared to India's rate of 2.9. Additionally, female murder rates are also lower in Bulgaria (0.8) than in India (2.5). While both countries face challenges related to organized crime, Bulgaria generally has better indices in several categories. For example, Bulgaria's score for mafia groups is 4.5 compared to India's 3.5, indicating a higher level of organized crime in India. Overall, tourists from India can feel relatively secure when visiting Bulgaria, but standard travel precautions should always be observed.
