Burkina Faso offers a unique and diverse cultural experience, making it an intriguing destination for adventurous Belgian travelers. While it attracts fewer tourists compared to other countries, its intrinsic attractions could appeal to a segment of the 8.6 million Belgians who travel abroad annually.
Burkina Faso presents safety concerns for tourists, including those from Belgium. According to the Global Peace Index, Burkina Faso ranks 146th out of 160 countries, indicating lower safety compared to Belgium, which ranks 16th. While the murder rate in Burkina Faso is slightly higher at 1.3 per 100,000 people compared to Belgium's 1.1, the overall crime environment is less stable. Furthermore, the Global Organized Crime Index shows that Burkina Faso has higher indices for various types of crime, with a score of 6.5 for crime networks and state crime, compared to Belgium's much lower scores of 4.5 and 2.0, respectively. This suggests a more significant presence of organized crime and instability in Burkina Faso. In summary, while both countries have relatively low murder rates, the overall safety and crime environment in Burkina Faso is considerably less secure than in Belgium, making it advisable for tourists to exercise caution.
