Belgium is an appealing destination for Mexican travelers due to its rich cultural heritage and modern attractions. The country's historical significance, stunning architecture, and charming cities such as Brussels, Bruges, and Antwerp contribute to its allure. With 7.3 million Mexicans traveling abroad annually, Belgium could attract a notable number of these visitors.
Belgium is generally considered safe for tourists, including those from Mexico. While it ranks 39th among 40 European countries for safety when walking alone at night, it is significantly safer than Mexico in various crime statistics. According to the Global Peace Index, Belgium is ranked 16th out of 160 countries, while Mexico ranks 136th. In terms of murder rates, Belgium has a low rate of 1.1 per 100,000 people compared to Mexico's 28.2. Female murder rates also reflect this trend, with Belgium at 0.2 and Mexico at 6.2. The Global Organized Crime Index further highlights the disparity, with Mexico scoring poorly across various crime categories, such as mafia groups (9.0) and crime networks (9.0), while Belgium scores much better (3.0 and 4.5, respectively). Overall, while no destination is without risk, Belgium is a safer option for tourists compared to Mexico.
