Belgium is an appealing destination for some Maldivians due to its rich cultural heritage, historical significance, and vibrant cities like Brussels, Bruges, and Antwerp. Its architectural wonders and contemporary attractions contribute to its status as a popular tourist spot, potentially attracting a segment of the Maldivian population.
Belgium is generally considered safe for tourists, including those from the Maldives. According to the Global Peace Index, Belgium ranks 16th out of 160 countries, indicating a relatively high level of safety. However, it ranks 39th out of 40 European countries for safety while walking alone at night, which suggests some caution may be warranted in certain areas. In terms of crime statistics, Belgium has a murder rate of 1.1 per 100,000 people, compared to the Maldives' lower rate of 0.6. While both countries face challenges with organized crime, Belgium has a better score in state crime (2.0 vs. Maldives' 4.0) but higher scores in drug-related crimes. Overall, while Belgium presents some safety concerns, particularly at night, it remains a safe destination for tourists, especially when standard precautions are taken.
