Belgium is an appealing destination for some Hungarian travelers due to its rich cultural heritage and vibrant cities like Brussels, Bruges, and Antwerp. With 4.4 million Hungarians traveling abroad annually, a portion of them may find Belgium an interesting place to visit.
Belgium's safety for tourists from Hungary presents a mixed picture. While Belgium ranks 39th out of 40 countries for safety when walking alone at night, indicating a higher risk compared to Hungary's 16th place, it is important to note that Belgium is ranked 16th out of 160 countries on the Global Peace Index, making it one of the safest countries globally, similar to Hungary's 14th position. In terms of murder rates, Hungary has a lower rate at 0.8 per 100,000 people compared to Belgium's 1.1. Additionally, female murder rates are lower in Hungary (0.5) than in Belgium (0.2). Regarding organized crime, Hungary generally scores better than Belgium across various indices, particularly in mafia presence and crime networks. However, Belgium has a lower score for state crime and performs similarly in other categories like foreign crime and human trafficking. Overall, while Belgium has certain safety concerns, particularly at night, it remains a relatively safe destination for tourists, comparable to Hungary in many respects.
