Belgium is an appealing destination for Canadian visitors, thanks to its rich cultural heritage, stunning architecture, and vibrant cities like Brussels, Bruges, and Antwerp. With around 5 million Canadians traveling abroad annually, a portion of them is likely to be drawn to Belgium's unique offerings.
Belgium is generally considered safe for tourists, including those from Canada. According to the Global Peace Index, Belgium ranks 16th out of 160 countries, indicating a high level of safety comparable to Canada, which ranks 11th. However, Belgium ranks 39th among 40 European countries for safety while walking alone at night. In terms of crime statistics, Belgium has a lower murder rate (1.1 per 100,000) compared to Canada (2.1 per 100,000). Regarding organized crime, Belgium has some higher indices in areas such as drug trafficking and human smuggling compared to Canada, but overall, both countries have their challenges. In summary, while there are some safety concerns, Belgium remains a safe destination for Canadian tourists, especially when compared to global standards.
